Weeds

We collect weeds (sometimes called 'plants in the wrong place') that grow wild and free in the city. We pick them from nooks in pavements and cracks in walls, taking great care to remove the complete specimen from root to tip, warts and all. These are then documented and archived, and pressed on herbarium paper, to be kept longterm.

Working with weeds

The flora we harvest serves as a unique design material. After pressing it in our herbarium for at least two weeks, we work with the detailed silhouetted forms to create all the patterns that we use in our designs. The compositions we create highlight the beauty of the plants’ natural formation.

Direct impressions

From these compositions we create photographic veils to transfer our designs onto the tiles. The impressions left are immortalised in the surface of the tile by the craftsman's hand.

It is an on-going project and the herbarium is regularly updated with new specimens. We see it as an active map of the force of nature in our urban environment.
