the herbarium
The subjects of our designs come from our own herbarium, a library of pressed botanicals foraged from the cracks in the walls and pavements of the city.
We take care to capture the whole plant, including the roots. After pressing, the flora are selected and arranged in compositions to create the tile designs.
The tiles
Botanical Tiles are hand made using traditional tile making techniques. We use poured tin glazes that pool on the surface of the tile to create deep colour and natural variations in tone.
craftsmanship
Our designs are created using the centuries-old technique of sgrafitto. For this process, a pattern is created by carefully scratching into the glaze to reveal the layer underneath. Craftsmen work on each and every tile by hand so the botanical is captured in the finest detail.
